ENVIRONMENT/RECYCLING
COMMITTEE:
West End and Carthage sites are equipped to recycle plastics (#1 thru #6 but no black) thanks to our committee efforts !! Your only chance to recycle mixed paper and flattened cardboard (also cereal boxes, appliance boxes) together as well as junk mail / shredded paper / telephone books / Christmas cards / wrapping paper / paper of any kind / newspapers and magazines, if you are not already taking elsewhere. Bring to the BP gas station by Fresh Market; look for the large green WMI dumpster between 9 AM and 3 PM on Saturday, March 10, May 12, July 14... We held three record breaking collections in 2005 on October 15th (4,400 lbs), November 12th (5,620 lbs) and in 2006 on February 25th (8,920 lbs) and April (over 10,000 lbs)! Sponsored by Keep Moore County Beautiful (KMCB), Executive Director Joan Neal with assistance from LWVMC, Recycling Committee Chair Dot Greenwood 215-0443. Did you know that recycling provides almost 9,000 jobs in NC? besides reducing the landfills and providing needed materials to save the cost and use of raw materials. For instance, cereal boxes, some brands of computer paper and note pads use recycled materials…The Pilot’s paper is from 100% recycled materials! So your need to recycle is extremely important to them and the landfill! OBSERVER CORPS – Our objective is to attend town/village meetings and report on the main issues that concern the residents. We regularly cover meetings of the Commissioners, Education, Aberdeen, Cameron, Carthage, Foxfire, Pinebluff, Pinehurst, Robbins, Seven Lakes (2), Southern Pines, Taylortown, Vass and Whispering Pines. As our League continues with consideration of the water, transportation and economic issues in Moore County, actually watching elected officials as they make decisions is very informative. Please call Committee Chair Nora Moran at 949-2904 if you would like to volunteer or just enjoy attending one of the meetings. JUDICIAL REFORM – Committee Chair Dot Greenwood at 215-0443 has a 21 page publication entitled ‘The Commission on the American Jury, a Year in Review’ from the American Bar Association. If interested in reading this publication, contact Dot. ISSUES & RESEARCH COMMITTEE - Its purpose is to inform our membership of selected House and Senate Bills or issues that are being considered on a local, state or federal level that we think you would be particularly interested in learning about. Our goal is to give you information that is brief and clearly stated, and we will, on occasion, encourage you to take action and contact our elected officials. And we will provide a way for you to take action. There may be Bills that our State or National League has given consensus on or information on a proposed Bill that warrants your attention. If you become aware of a Bill that you would like to know more about, please contact Joan Zamaroni. We also want to involve any willing members and let you have some of the fun of choosing Bills to explore, dig out the information and present it at a future membership meeting. We’ll help you get started. We expect to keep presentations brief (about 3 minutes per Bill). The best way to understand a Bill is to do a little ‘homework’ on it.
