This committee coordinates reservations for our monthly meeting.  We meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except Juy, August and December).  Our meetings are held at Table on The Green, at Midland Country Club, 2205 Midland Road (Rte 2), Pinehurst.  The cost for the luncheon is $12.00 and all reservations (and cancellations) should be made with Charlotte Gallagher at 944-7611.  There are informative and interesting speakers at each meeting – PLEASE JOIN US!

Fundraising -        See full size image

Ah yes – money, everyone’s favorite topice!!  However, just like all organizations, the League needs funding to continue to provide the wonderful services and outreach programs for the Public.  Currently, our League raises these needed funds through 4  projects:

Lunch with Legends -Lunch with Legends is our primary fund rasing project. This wildly propular luncheon is held in March of each year in celebration of  Women’s History Month.  The audience is treated to a wonderful gormet lunch, followed by a program describing the lives of three women that had a major impact on our country.   All three women were, activists, suffragettes, or political forces, depending on the time period of their lives, as well as mothers, wives, daughters, etc.  And the biographies are provided by theladies themselves – dressed in the period costumes of their time!   Our Lunch with Legends has even received statewide recognition – so you won’t want to miss this fabulous program!

Ladies Nine Hole Golf Touramanent-   In the spring we host a nine-hole golf tournament and lunch  – JUST FOR GALS!  The tournament is held at Midland Country Club after a wonderful lunch at Table on the Green.   Join us for a fun, easy, and relaxing afternoon of golf with your favorite foursome – you may even win a cool prize…..golf prize or door prize!

Lake It with the League

During October we all get together to enjoy the beautiful North Carolina fall weather at Johnson’s Point on Lake Auman at Seven Lakes West.  This party is an opportunity for League members and their friebox lunch cartoonnds to meet at a beautiful site late on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy snacks provided by their board, a great gormet box lunch and the swingin sounds  of the Swing Street Five band!!  Sometimes we even get up and dance……   This event is unadvertised outside our league and tickets are limited, so you will want to watch the calendar for next year’s events!!

BEAUTIFUL FLAG SCARVES:

To make sure that everyone has an opportunity to celebrate their pride and love for our country , we sell beautiful scarves of red, white, and blue stars and stripes as an ongoing project.  Not only are they beautiful to wear – they make wonderful gifts for any of your friends and family that are proud to be Americans.     For information on how to purchase one of these lovely scarves, please call Mary Lou Bernett at 910-692-8839 or email at mlbernett@nc.rr.com.

West End and Carthage sites are equipped to recycle plastics (#1 thru #6 but no black) thanks to our committee efforts!!Recycle all your mixed paper and flattened cardboard (cartons, cereal boxes, appliance boxes, etc.) together as well as junk mail / shredded paper / telephone books / greeting cards / gift paper / newspapers / shiny ads / magazines, if you are not already taking these elsewhere. Also batteries! Bring to the Kangaroo gas station by Fresh Market and look for the large green WMI dumpster between 9 AM and 3 PM on Saturday, November 8, 2008 by KMCB. Please keep in mind that volunteers are always appreciated (set your own hours).

Recycling is sponsored by Keep Moore County Beautiful and the Towns of Aberdeen and Southern Pines and the Village of Pinehurst.

Observer Corps -

Our objective is to attend town/village meetings and report on the main issues that concern the residents. Remember to wear your LWV button. We regularly cover meetings at the following organizations and towns:

Board of Commissioners – Jean Burbage & Carolyn Mealing (substitutes Norma Sullins & Betty Parker)
Board of Education – Linda Tableman
Aberdeen – Charlotte Gallagher
Pinehurst – Ann Torok & Mary Ellen Tindall
Robbins – Ginny Roth
Southern Pines – John Reagan & Darlene Horton
Vass
Whispering Pines –  Joan Zamaroni

Our League continues with consideration of water, transportation and economic issues in Moore County by actually watching elected officials as they make decisions and this is very informative. Please call Committee Chair Ed Dennison at 295-5570 if you would like to volunteer or just enjoy attending one of the meetings.

Judicial Reform –

Issues & Research Committee -confused man

Its purpose is to inform our membership of selected House and Senate Bills or issues that are being considered on a local, state or federal level that we think you would be particularly interested in learning about. Our goal is to give you information that is brief and clearly stated, and we will, on occasion, encourage you to take action and contact our elected officials and we will provide a way for you to take that action. There may be Bills that our State or National League has given consensus on or information on a proposed Bill that warrants your attention.

If you become aware of a Bill that you would like to know more about, please contact Linda Tableman at 673-3633.  We also want to involve any willing members and let you have some of the fun of choosing Bills to explore, dig out the information and present it at a future membership meeting. We’ll help you get started. We expect to keep presentations brief (about 3 minutes per Bill). The best way to understand a Bill is to do a little ‘homework’ on it.

Voter Services Committee –

Voters services covers 3 basic areas to serve the voters in our county.

Candidate Forums. Candidate forums are conducted in any election year .  We provide forums for candidates for all local offices, state legistative offices and school boards.   See full size image  When a decision is made to host a forum, based on the majority decision by the slate of candidats, all candidates are invited.  All candidates receive written questions in advance of the forum and are given the time periods they will be allowed to speak.  On the evening of the forum audience questions are encouraged, however all questions are directed to all candidates.  The League of Women Voters of Moore County never endorses a candidate or a political party.

Participation in County Fesitvals.balloons   In the Spring we participate with booths at the Southern Pines Springfest and the Carthage Buggy Festival.  In the fall we host booths at the Southern Pines Autumnfest and the Pinehurst Holly Festival.  We provide voter registration opportunities to anyone needing to register to vote or change their registration as well as information on the elections in the county and all municipalities, depending on the election year.  We also provide free balloons to all of the children (and children at heart) who attend our festivals while providing lots of information on our League and how to become a member.

man votingCandidate Guides.  Every four years, during the Presidential Campaign year, our League provides a Candiate Guide provideing comprehensive information regarding all of the candidates on the ticket, National, State and Loca.  This Guide  is published through the generous contribution of the The Pilot, our local newspaper.  It is the desire of the League to provide as much information on the candidates for elected office to the voting public as possible, in an easy to read, easy to keep periodical.  We invite all candidates that will be listed on the ballot to participate in this guide, although not all candidates choose to do so.  Our goal is to
